Traditional masonry retaining walls are an ancient method of ground engineering, with design and structural concepts that remain effective today. Whilst we have the capability to design and build this type of wall, we will also apply our knowledge, resources and experience in providing other innovative forms of earth retention with very pleasing results for our clients.

Gravity walls 

The classic retaining wall, which relies on gravity and a “batter” setback leaning the structure into the soil to be retained; friction does the rest! Walls can be constructed from mortarless stone, masonry units, geosynthetics, timber or concrete crib or with precast facings or precast concrete cells which are then filled with free draining stone. Gravity walls can also be supplemented and further strengthened by installations such as soil nailing. 

Cantilevered walls 

An alternative solution that can still be a useful method in certain situations. Thin stems of reinforced concrete, shaped like an upside down “T”  the cantilever can support the active soil pressures and transfer any applied forces  vertically into the ground they sit on. Additional buttressing increases strength and rigid concrete footings keep the cantilevers firmly in place; the whole system uses much less material than a typical gravity wall.

Gabion mesh walls

A specific type of gravity retaining wall, gabions are wire mesh boxes filled with rough cut quarried stone or a combination of stone and topsoil to promote vegetative growth depending upon individual landscaping requirements. The mesh cages and rough stonework form a containment system, where the horizontal component of the self weight of the filled gabions act against overturning and horizontal forces, and can be designed to be resistant to erosion in stream bank situations.
