A substancial contiguous piled reinforced concrete retaining wall was originally intended to be installed on this site, but on viewing the geological information provided by the client further SI was detailed and as a result Geoforte determined a more cost effective and aesthetically pleasing solution.

Soil nailing and timber crib facing was extensively used to support the rear upper terrace slopes of up to 6m retained height in difficult ground conditions of sandy clays with weak soliflucted deposits with groundwater seepages.

Nails were installed using 'top down' methods as bulk excavation proceeded in pre-determined stages on site, with associated savings in time and health and safety considerations.

Lower terrace slopes of up to 3.5m retained height were similarly supported with soil nails, facing mesh and shotcrete as temporary works support prior to the construction of new RC integral retaining walls to the new close care units.
