Varying ground conditions, restrictive access and the presence of existing houses close to site boundaries, where some 7m drop in level was required, provided a background for a hybrid approach to the design and construction of the necessary earth retaining structures on this site.
Contiguous reinforced concrete piles of up to 750mm diameter were installed to depths exceeding 15m adjacent to the existing highway and dwellings flanking the site. These were supplemented by soil nailed upper slopes with terraced timber crib gravity walls to the mid and lower slope areas of the back gardens of the new plots.
Approvals were required from East Sussex County Council Highways Department for this development too as the rear terraced slopes were adjacent to an adoptable road.
