A severely restricted access site in the back gardens of existing established properties on a residential Housing Association Development in Canterbury required a sensitive but effective approach.
A chalk bank some 8m in height had a history of rock falls and debris falling into the gardens below, requiring a soil nailed and ground anchor solution with protective tensioned face netting and associated drainage.
Extensive site clearance of existing shrubs, garden sheds, patio and garden furniture was carried out even before we could access the bank itself.
The depth, height above ground and design strength of soil nails meant that large capacity plant may be necessary for installation, but the narrow cul-de-sac entrance road, the presence of numerous parked vehicles and the need to keep construction noise levels and build disturbance low due to the close proximity of live-in residents led to a more site sensitive solution.
A full height tubular access scaffold and associated temporary works including scaffold outriggers and the use of top soil nails as temporary tie restraints were designed and installed to provide a platform for the light weight rig, which was mounted on a special tubular gantry and repositioned at each soil nail location.
All installed nails were subject to pull out testing on site, and the contract was completed on time with minimum disruption.
