The properties of insitu chalk soils on this contract suited a soil nailed earth retention solution. There were also many protected established trees in a zone of ground close to the crest of many of the retaining walls so this type of application was appropriate in order to minimize root disturbance and dig profile. Timber crib facing was built and linked to the soil nail heads throughout, with grow bags providing the basis for decorative indigenous planting which enhanced the merits of the soft landscaped aspects of this type of walling system, presenting pleasant unimposing elevations on this housing development site.
The main 6m high earth retaining structure was adjacent to an adoptable highway and was subject to engineering approval by the Local Authority.
